XTerra QE3

XTerra QE3 is the boost behind us - powder drinks and energy bars! Their products deliver the nutritional boost to bang out a marathon a day for 3 months - that's what SonicTrek is doing!

Canon

Canon is supplying us with the lightest digital camcorder in the world, the Elura! Weighing only one pound (including batteries and tape), it is lighter than many still cameras - yet it can also take digital stills! We will use the Elura to document the journey.

Pristine

Pristine is a new safe way to purify water without the hassles of water purifier and unhealthy side-effects of iodine. Best of all, it's the lightest water purification solution we can get! Try it, we recommend it!

Why do we love Cascade Designs? They supply our sleeping mat, our drinking containers, and our pack towel! Every thing is ultra-durable and super light!

Esbit

Esbit makes the best fuel around. The unique, patent white tablet burns for eight minutes and boils a liter of water. Super light and just awesome!

Oakwood

Oakwood specializes in corporate housing. They treated us to a couple of nights in some fancy apartment in Washington DC. It was the ultimate trail magic!

What makes this hike so special?

  1. The hike is well documented: We will have a video, still photos, and a book. We plan to sell the video to the cable station Outdoor Life Network (OLN) as a video documentary - proceeds going to the Triple Crown Trails (AT, CDT, and PCT). Still photos will be given to all our sponsor's PR departments. The book will be a philosophical, self-improvement book; with the conclusions arising from the SonicTrek experience.
  2. We're doing it for a good cause:  We've pledged that $1 from every book sold will go to the Triple Crown Trails. These trails receive little government money and depend on donations to survive. So we're happy to give back.
  3. We're fast: Hundreds of AT hikers fail to complete the 2200-mile trail, and the 10-15% who do make it usually take about 5-7 months; we took three months and three weeks. By going fast and light, we expect to draw attention to our important message.
  4. We're cool: Francis, a Harvard MBA/Religion BA, leaves behind Silicon Valley for the riches of nature. Lisa, who works for a real estate development company, leaves behind an industry that promotes development of pristine areas.
  5. It's just part one of a three-part quest to complete the Thru-Hike Triple Crown: We both want to hike the three major thru-trails - PCT, CDT, AT. While other AT hikers stop at the end of the 2200-mile trail, this pilgrimage will move onto the PCT and CDT.
